Ousted judge denied high court rehearing

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky Supreme Court has denied a request from a former eastern Kentucky judge to reconsider a ruling that removed him from the bench.

The high court upheld eight counts of misconduct and reversed one against former Harlan Circuit Court Judge Russell Alred earlier this year. The court said Alred should be removed because of his "pattern of misconduct" and disregard for the law.

On Thursday, the court said the July ruling would stand.

The Harlan Daily Enterprise reports (http://bit.ly/TleSGz) that Alred stopped receiving pay and benefits on Thursday.

Accusations against Alred include that he directed local government leaders to spend $500,000 in forfeited bond money on a water park in Harlan County and that he called for the appointment of a special grand jury to discredit a local politician.
