Overcrowding causing problems at Pike animal shelter

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Dozens of dogs are facing a possible death sentence at the Pike County Animal Shelter. Volunteers there say it is caused by constant overcrowding and is an unrelenting issue.

Tiara Potter says helping animals has always been top priority to her.

"God just put it on my heart at a young age to start helping these animals and he's really helped me," she said.

She says overcrowding is constantly causing many dogs to be put in "urgent" status, putting them at high risk to be euthanized.

"I know we can save them all if we just get some more help with it," said Potter.

Volunteers at the shelter say it is not just puppies that need homes. They say adult dogs and certain breeds like pit bulls are some of the hardest to adopt out, and black dogs and dogs with a lot of energy are also harder to find homes for.

Earlier this month 21 dogs were listed as urgent. Now there are 18 more with unsure futures. Volunteers say it has been a problem for a while, but recent changes in shelter management are helping.

"A lot of animal shelters don't tell people they have a problem, and Lorie is letting us tell people so we can get the word out and get these dogs out more importantly," said Potter.

They say they are willing to do whatever it takes to find homes for the dogs, including bringing the dogs to adopters.

"Some people just don't have a vehicle for whatever reason, elderly people just don't have a vehicle or don't have ways to get here," said Tracy May with Diamonds in the Ruff rescue. He plans to transport two dogs this week.

Volunteers say one look at those faces is enough to make anyone want to help them.

They created a Facebook page called Pike County Adoption Option that showcases adoptable pets, especially those listed as "urgent."
