PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) - Employees at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant will still have jobs in 60 days as United States Enrichment Corporation officials continue discussions regarding future operations.
Plant spokeswoman Georgann Lookofsky told The Paducah Sun that layoff notices have not been issued to any of the plant's 1,100 workers. Lookofsky says that officials from USEC, which leases the plant from the Department of Energy, is not planning to issue layoff notices.
Under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act, all employers with 100 or more employees to provide notifications 60 calendar days in advance of plant closings and mass layoffs.
Commercial enrichment operations at the plant have been uncertain for some time as the market for nuclear technology dwindles. Contracts signed in 2012 with multiple parties end May 31.
