Panel denies request for stay in redistricting lawsuits

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WYMT) - A three judge panel has denied a request for a stay by House Speaker Greg Stumbo in two lawsuits asking judges to redraw legislative boundaries in Kentucky.

Governor Steve Beshear called a special legislative session starting August 19th to deal with the issue.

U.S. District Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove acknowledges the legislature has the primary responsibility, but says the court has the secondary responsibility should the legislature fail.

He says a stay would interfere with the court's duties.

The panel also set a trial in the case for September 23rd.
