HAZARD, Ky (WYMT) - Believe it or not, it's almost time for school to start in many Eastern Kentucky school districts.

That also means the yearly ritual of back-to-school shopping is underway.

A new study shows that parents are anticipating higher costs for school supplies this year.

Some say the biggest mistake parents can make is buying everything for school before the first bell rings.

In this economy, many parents simply can't afford to break the bank as they buy everything from backpacks to book-covers.

Tthe National Retail Federation estimates that parents will spend more than 600 dollars on their kids school supplies.

Teachers at Jackson City School say you don't have to spend big bucks to buy new school supplies.

Jackson City School has a family resource center, which relieves students and parents who are short on supplies.

Resource centers offer plentiful help, so that parents don't have to decide between putting food on the table or supplies in the book bag.
