PERRY COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - The Perry County School District is preparing for a possible budget cut, but officials say it is too early to know exact numbers.

During a tough economy, things for the Perry County School District could get tougher.

“We've got some tough decisions to make,” said Interim Superintendent, Jonathan Jett.

School Board Officials said a draft budget for the districts has showing a cut in state funding known as SEEK funds.

“It could be depending on what the final numbers are, $150,000 to $200,000,” said Jett.

The amount of SEEK funding schools receive is based upon attendance and enrollment numbers and officials said enrollment has been down by about 60 students.

“We do everything we can to push attendance. At buckhorn we have special programs and little activities on low attendance days,” said Tiffany Lyttle, a teacher at The Buckhorn School.

Teachers and officials hoped to find a way to keep the money in the budget.

They said they don't want to punish the students that are in school every day because of the ones that aren't, even if it means having a party.

“The day before Christmas break we had planned to have a school wide pizza party just to get kids to come to school,” said Lyttle.

Officials said they still have time to make the necessary decisions.

“As we progress throughout getting to the final budget, we'll make some decisions. The board will have some decisions to make as far as what we're going to do, cuts we're going to have to make, if we do,” said Jett.

They are aiming to avoid affecting the students if at all possible.
