Perry County woman waits on heart donor

LEXINGTON (WYMT) - A Perry County woman already dealing with a setback is now asking for help to save her life.

Ariana Sumner, 23, has been in UK hospital since April 26 with Peripartum Cardiomyopathy, a disorder that weakens the heart around the time of pregnancy.

The disease caused Sumner to give birth to her daughter stillborn in February.

"I keep my emotions in the back of my mind because if I focus on those I wouldn't be able to make it," Sumner said. "I want to get a heart and go home and visit my daughter's grave."

Sumner's family members said they cannot imagine life without her.

"She's outgoing," Sumner's aunt, Willa Cody, said. "She was working and going to school before she got pregnant. Everybody likes her. She's just a real sweet girl."

Sumner needs a new heart. Two machines are supporting her heart to help her stay alive.

"Right now there are 68 people in Kentucky waiting for a heart," Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates spokeswoman Donna Slone said. "And they are among 3,500 people in the United States waiting for a heart."

"Everybody will die, but you can make a difference in someone's life," Sumner said.
