HAZARD, Ky (WYMT) - The Perry County School Board voted to approve an interim superintendent Monday.

Jonathan Jett is currently the maintenance and transportation director for Perry County Schools, but he will be taking over as interim superintendent when current Superintendent John Paul Amis retires November 1st.

After more than three hours in executive session, Jett was named interim superintendent with a 4-1 vote.

"I look forward to the challenges ahead. I look forward to working with all the staff and providing the students with the best possible education we can," said Jett.

Board Chairman John Combs says Jett is a hard worker and will do a good job.

Previously, Mountain News reported that during an investigation into an ACT cheating scandal, Jett accepted an agreed order where two of his educational certificates were suspended for between 12 and 18 months.

But, The Educational Professional Standards Board noted he did not have any direct involvement with the tests.

The EPSB's website says Jett cannot have anything to do with supervising testing, but he can still hold the offices of superintendent, assistant superintendent and principal.

"Don't wanna get caught up on anything in the past, just want to move forward," said Jett.

He says he wants to stay focused on education.

Chairman John Combs says they interviewed Jett and former Perry County Central High School Principal Estill Neace for the position.

Jett tells Mountain News at this time he will apply for the permanent position.
