BEREA, Ky. (AP) - A Berea resident says he has sent petition cards to all registered voters in the city to gauge public opinion on allowing alcohol sales in the city.

The Richmond Register reports Jim Lucas told the Berea City Council last week that he plans to send the cards that are returned to the Madison County clerk and request a referendum on the issue.

The last time a citywide vote on liquor sales was taken was in July 2007. Voters defeated the measure 1,539 to 1,125. It would have limited drink sales to restaurants.

Lucas and other supporters of alcohol sales say it is "an economic progress, development-type issue."

Madison County Clerk Kenny Barger said if a petition is filed, his office will determine whether it has enough valid signatures.
