Petition against one man's parole

A man convicted of manslaughter could be out on parole soon in Letcher County.

October 7, 2010 was the day 48-year-old Mark Sturgill who was shot and killed.

Melissa Sturgill, along with the rest of her family, just want justice for the man who was killed over an issue with a dog.

Samuel collier has served nearly two years of his 10-year sentence which is not enough for Sturgill's family.

She is petitioning Samuel "Todd" Collier's parole in more ways than one.

"At least I will know that I will do everything I could do, and if he gets out, I can look my kids in the eyes and say that I did everything that I could do," said Melissa Sturgill, Mark's wife.

It all happened October 7, 2010 when Mark Sturgill was walking his dog.

Collier fired shots leaving both Sturgill and his dog Jake dead and now his wife Melissa and two sons living in constant fear.

"They're fearful that he will be released and that he will come after us and possibly kill us," said Melissa.

Melissa says her intentions are to keep Collier in jail serving his full 10-year sentence for manslaughter.

Collier has served nearly two years of his sentence meaning he could walk out of the Letcher County Jail a free man soon.

"If he were to be paroled, my children and I most likely will probably have to move from the place we have lived all of our lives," said Melissa.

Officials with the parole board say all written statements and petitions will be considered, which Melissa hopes will change the fate of Collier's time served.

"Death is forever. There's no percentage on death. There shouldn't be a percentage on his sentence," said Melissa.

With a couple hundred signatures and nearly 200 likes on Facebook, Melissa believes she is well on her way to insuring justice is served for Mark.

A victim hearing will be held with the parole board July 16th.

Collier is up for parole in September.
