Midway College's School of Pharmacy will no longer be coming to Paintsville.

Signs for Midway College School of Pharmacy still stand in Paintsville, but signs on the building's doors say it is closed.

The pharmacy school's uncertainty comes after Midway withdrew its application for accreditation and a partnership with the University of Charleston fell through.

"We were working with the University of Charleston to see if they would like to utilize the facility that we have for a branch campus of their program," said Midway College spokeperson Ellen Gregory.

But UC officials decided it was not in their best interest, so now Midway is left with an empty building and several applicants without a school.

"We have since been in the reimbursement stage with those students, reimbursing any deposits or academic fees that they had paid," said Gregory.

City officials say losing the prospective school does not hurt the city, but they had their hopes up for what it could potentially bring in.

The mayor says if Midway College had brought the pharmacy school to Paintsville, it would have made a nearly $30 million economic impact per year. He says that loss is disappointing to the city.

"We were looking forward to that, but we're going to have to look for something else now," said Paintsville Mayor Bob Porter.

He says even though he cannot discuss them at this time, there are some prospects.

"From the city's perspective it's not devastating. It just puts us back where we were without the pharmacy school which is where we have been," said Porter.

City officials are working with Midway to determine the future of the property. Midway's board of trustees is meeting Thursday to discuss what will happen with the Paintsville campus.
