PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - It started as a pickpocket case that quickly turned into a multi-county investigation. Officials in Johnson County say last month they received a call about a stolen wallet and they are now linking that case to numerous thefts across the Big Sandy region.

Johnson County Sheriffs Deputy Tim Clark was dispatched on a call about a stolen wallet in West Van Lear on April 21st. Deputy Clark says, "This person had a surveillance camera at his house, the vehicle stuck out and it caught my eye."

Clark had heard about a black Nissan reported to be involved in several utility trailer thefts. One of the trailers belongs to, Alicia Arnett of Magoffin County, who confronted the owner of the black Nissan, Thurman J. Caudill.

Arnett says, "He took me to my trailer where he had sold it to someone for $500." That location was in Johnson County, so Arnett contacted the Sheriff's Office earlier this week.

Deputy Clark says, "We arrived on scene at a place in Caudill Fork in Oil Springs and there was the black vehicle."

Deputies arrested Caudill for that theft, then Arnett told deputies Caudill was pulling another trailer but ditched it in Magoffin County. Officials say they have recovered the trailer which had been stolen from Johnson County.

They are also looking into reports in Floyd and Lawrence Counties.

Caudill has been charged with one count of receiving stolen property. Officials are working on all other reports before more charges are filed.

Deputies say they are working with all other agencies involved to look into every tip and lead. A system has been developed called the, Big Sandy "Tied" Team Email, for agencies to share information. "Tied" stands for, Theft Information Exchange Distribution.

They encourage anyone with information regarding this investigation to contact the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.
