PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Some Pike County students got to see first hand the dangers of drunk and distracted driving Friday.

Pikeville Medical Center, Shelby Valley High School and first responders teamed up for a mock car crash.

The scenario gave students an up close look at the toll poor driving choices can take.

The sirens sounded and screams rang out, but it was all an act.

"It was an effort that we felt necessary. We're getting ready to enter the prom weekend, and we wanted to make sure our kids understand the dangers of distracted driving and drunk driving," said Greg Napier, SVHS Principal.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say in 2010 an average of seven teens died in car accidents every day and that teens are three times more likely to be in a fatal crash.

"We hope this helps students see the effects that poor decisions can have on their lives and the lives of their entire community," said Laura Damron with Pikeville Medical Center.

Friday's event enacted a two car accident.

In one car was a drunk dad driving his daughter and her friend.

In the other car were two students headed to prom, texting and driving.

Emergency teams acted out exactly what would happen in such a situation.

They had hands-on events for the students to try like DUI goggles which simulate what it is like to do a field sobriety test while under the legal limit in the state of Kentucky.

Police put the acting dad behind bars for DUI, while his 'daughter' was rolled out in a casket.

The students involved say it was fun to act out, but they know it holds a serious meaning.

"To save lives of people, our friends, save our own lives," said Chase Mosley.

The event was for Shelby Valley High School's juniors and seniors. Their prom is this weekend.

State troopers say they will have extra police presence on prom weekends.
