PHELPS, Ky. (WYMT) - A birthday party for a 105-year-old is not something that comes very often, and it is something friends and family of, Della Griffey, are thankful to be celebrating.
Family members say Griffey has been in Pike County her entire life. Griffey's granddaughter, Brittany Belcher says, " She rode horseback all the way from Phelps to Pikeville to go to Pikeville College."
She went on to become a successful business woman in the community where many folks call her a pillar.
Belcher says, "Her and my grandfather operated a store here for 60 years."
The local supermarket, known as Phelps Plumbing and Electric, was the only grocery store in the area for many years.
Pamela Fields says, "She's the peppiest little woman I have ever met. She was always up trying to help. No matter what you were doing she wanted to be in on the action and helping to do it. I'd say that is what kept her young."
Helping others, hard work, a strong and loving family, along with her daily dose of chocolate truffles is what family members say has helped Griffey see more than one century of life.
The birthday celebration was held at Peter Creek Presbyterian Church which also plays a big part in Griffey's life as it is where she has been a member for 65 years.
Fields says, "It is something that should be celebrated. If you live to be 105, you have truly been blessed by the Lord."
