PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Some Pikeville firefighters are raising money to head to Myrtle Beach later this month.
They will be competing in the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge World Championships.
The combat team says this is a great opportunity for them to participate in with hundreds of teams from around the world competing.
You might not normally see firefighters selling brownies, but this group says the money raised helps them improve their skills at the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge.
It is the second year they have been.
"Last year we actually, that was our goal was just to qualify to get to the world championships, and we actually ended up finishing. We ran the 40th fastest time in the world," said team member brandon hayton.
More than 200 teams competed.
"It's a series of five realistic life events, as you would encounter them in the fire service. running stairs, pulling weight, dragging hose, forceable entry, and victim rescue," said Hayton.
This year's competition will take place the week of November 12th, and the group says they are honored to be a part of it.
"The better that we are at doing this competition and the better physically fit that we are, the better we can do our jobs and help save people," said team member Mitch Case.
They say the community support is overwhelming.
"They just show so much support, and they're happy that we're there for them," said Case.
"None of this stuff is cheap, so we're thankful and grateful for all the support we can get," said Hayton.
The combat team will also be selling their baked goods in front of Walmart on Saturday and Sunday from 11 to 7.
The team will be in Myrtle Beach from November 12-17.
