Pikeville officials appoint new police chief

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - City officials in Pikeville have appointed a new police chief.

The City Commission spent two days interviewing four candidates and announced their choice on Thursday.

"This was not a decision that came very easily. It was a long decision with a lot of thought," said City Commissioner Barry Chaney.

The Commission chose to appoint Detective Phillip Reed as Chief of Police.

"I've worked really hard, a lot of dedication, and i'm really honored to be standing here today," said Reed.

Reed has been with the department since 2001. He is replacing current Chief James Adkins who announced his retirement earlier this year.

Reed says he has big shoes to fill, but he has high hopes for the department he has called home for more than a decade.

"I do want to continue with the programs that we have, as well as more programs, more training, just to continue being successful and providing this community with the best service possible," he said.

Reed will take over after Chief Adkins' last day at work on Friday.

The commission also promoted Sgt. Ricky Younce and Sgt. Chris Edmonds as captains.
