PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Some students in Pike County got a hands-on experience to learn about organ donation Friday morning.

It is a program schools throughout the state are eager to get their hands on, but it was the story of one local basketball coach that brought it here.

When University of Pikeville Basketball Coach Kelly Wells walked into Pikeville Elementary School Friday, many of the fourth graders surrounding him did not know this was a day Wells once believed he might not see.

"Having a disease called Bergers, a kidney disease, having high blood pressure and having a transplant I'm almost a model for every station that we have here today," said Wells.

Wells' kidney disease forced him to need a transplant.

Miraculously his wife Shawne was a match.

Wells has been living with her kidney since 2004.

"It's important for me to share that knowledge with people and for them to see that it just doesn't happen to the guys in different states but it actually happens to the people that they're family with and around so awareness is important," said Wells.

Friday at Pikeville Elementary was all about awareness.

Organizations from throughout the state met to show kids how important healthy living and organ donation can be with more than 900 people in Kentucky waiting for life-saving transplants.

The program is so in demand by schools they too have a waiting list, but it was Wells' story that brought them here.

"My gosh he is so important in this community, and we felt for the awareness that he brings to organ donation we kind of owed it to him to bring it here to his community," said Charlotte Wong with Kentucky Organ Donation Affiliates.

It is a chance for kids to get hands on with science, and a chance for them to see that they could save lives.
