A local college is now considering itself a university. Pikeville College officials announced Monday that after a Board of Trustees meeting, they have created an MBA program, which now qualifies the school as a university. Officials say the mascot and the colors will most likely stay the same.

Pikeville College is upgrading...to a university status.

"A college is an institution that offers bachelor's degrees. A university is an institution that offers bachelor's degrees, master's degrees and doctorate degrees," said Paul Patton, President of Pikeville College.

Pikeville now offers all three degree options, thanks to a new masters of business administration program that will begin in the fall of 2011.

"It's a big deal. It's a big change. I think it's going to be good for the future of the college and for enrollment," said Cory White, a senior at the college.

"We are functioning as a university and the direction that we're heading is taking us further down that path so lets acknowledge that," said Boyd Buser, the Vice President and Dean of the School of Osteopathic Medicine.

And people are doing just that...

"What better way, if we're acting like a university, to have a university name," said Dr. David A. Smith, an Associate Professor of Business.

The Board of Trustees has told the administration to come up with three new names using the word university and some students already have some ideas.

"The University of Pikeville. I like that name," said Allisandra Ward, a freshman at the school.

"The University of Central Appalachia," said Cory White.

Officials say the original name, Pikeville College, is also a possibility.

Officials say they are hoping to vote on a name during their May 21st meeting.
