Planning could soon begin to make one section of US-23 a little safer.

Officials say the stretch of US-23 from Town Branch Road to the intersection with Highway 80 in Floyd County has a high number of crashes.

They say speeding and several business entrances make the area more dangerous.

This past session of the legislature gave the highway district more than $2 million to start planning and constructing ways to keep drivers safer.

"As you might imagine there's really no quick fix. There's no one thing that's going to solve all the problems or address all the issues in that stretch of road, but our goal is to make it safer," said Sara George, Highway District 12.

Officials say a consultant will evaluate the road to come up with the best options.
