Police: Donations sought for fake patient

Hazard, Ky. (WYMT)-- Hazard Police arrested a man collecting donations on Highway 15 for a sick child who did not exist.

"This man was holding up a sign that said 'Sick child needs money,' and he was collecting money fraudulently," said Joseph Engle, Deputy Chief of the Hazard Police Department.

Cecil Ritchie is charged with theft by deception of less than $500 and disorderly conduct, Engle said.

"After further investigation, he did not have a sick child, and was just out here trying to take advantage of people," Engle said.

Ritchie declined WYMT's request for an interview in jail.
