Police: Ky. deputy shoots man with sword, gun

PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky State Police say a McCracken County deputy shot a 50-year-old man who brandished a handgun and a sword at him.

In a news release, authorities said Deputy Jared Rivera was called to a home on Saturday evening to respond to a possible suicidal person. The resident, 50-year-old Michael Lakin, was seen inside the home with a handgun.

The deputy retreated to his vehicle and Lakin appeared in the doorway with a sword and a handgun. The deputy gave him orders to drop the weapons, but Lakin started to move toward the deputy.

Rivera shot Lakin twice in the upper torso and an ambulance took him to a local hospital, where he is listed in serious condition.

Kentucky State Police charged Lakin with assault on a police officer.
