PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Two men were arrested for allegedly trying to steal an ATV in broad daylight in downtown Pikeville, but police say it is what they found inside the truck that really surprised them. They say one of the men had brought his three-year-old son along for the alleged heist.

Police say it is not a crime that usually happens in broad daylight especially in highly populated areas.

"Kind of odd, but you know crime occurs day and night. We're just thankful that someone witnessed it and gave us a tip that we could make a quick response," said Pikeville Police Chief Phillip Reed.

They say just after 9:00 Friday morning they got a call that two men were stealing an ATV from a lot just behind Chirico's Restaurant in downtown Pikeville. Police say the men pulled into the restaurant parking lot, attached the trailer to their truck, and drove away.

"We responded immediately. When we got on scene subjects had already left, but we tracked them down on Town Mountain Road," said Pikeville Public Safety Director Paul Maynard.

That is where they say they found Terry Beavers and Daniel Allen driving the truck pulling the trailer and ATV, and they say Allen's three-year-old son was also in the truck.

"We were kind of surprised when we discovered that the three-year-old son was in the vehicle. We transported that child to the police station and released him to his grandmother," said Maynard.

Allen and Beavers were both charged with theft by unlawful taking and taken the the Pike County Detention Center.
