Police arrest woman for stealing, crushing, selling car for scrap

ROWAN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT/WYMT) - Police have arrested a woman who they say convinced a tow truck company that a broken down car was hers, then had it crushed and sold it as scrap metal.

36-year-old Molly Litteral was arrested Friday night at her home in Morehead.

On Saturday, WKYT’s Jordan Vilines spoke to Litteral from jail and caught up with the victim as well:

For 22-year-old Brittany Stacy, the past week has had its fair share of highs and lows. Last Saturday, after her car broke down off Interstate 64, someone stole it, had it towed and then sold for scrap!

"It’s my husband's only way to work. It’s my only way to school. I’ve got a one year old daughter that I have to take to doctor's appointments,” Brittany Stacy told us.

But on Friday, a stranger stepped in to help lift Stacy’s stress load.

“I didn’t realize until we got into the car lot and then I realized I was getting a car. I was amazed that someone would do something so nice for someone they don’t know.”

Cars of Kentucky in Richmond were touched when they heard Stacy’s story, prompting them to give her a replacement car free of charge.

“He paid the taxes and everything on it.”

Just hours after receiving her gift, Stacy was surprised once more after she learned that the person who allegedly stole and sold her car for scrap had been arrested.

Late Friday afternoon, Kentucky State Police arrested Molly Litteral at her home. They saying she’s the one responsible for the crime but she claims she's innocent.

“The only thing I know to say right now without an attorney because I haven’t been able to see or speak to one is that I’m innocent,” Molly Litteral told us from jail.

But Stacy isn't buying Litteral's story.

“I just want to ask her why she did it and why she thought she'd get away with it. Why would you risk your freedom for $250? Was it really worth it?”

Molly Litteral is currently being held in the Rowan County Detention Center. Her bond is set at $5,000.
