LONDON, Ky (WYMT) - The Laurel County Sheriff's Department is continuing to investigate a weekend home invasion.

It happened on Brannon Mill Road early Saturday morning.

Police say 74-year-old Earl Burnette was hit multiple times in the head causing him to have to go to the hospital.

Police say they are making progress in the investigation and have found a car stolen during the robbery.

On Sunday, police say they recovered the 2008 Ford Mustang. They say it was burned in Knox County.

Police are now interviewing persons of interest in the case and following up on leads.

"We have had some home invasions in Laurel County in the past two years, and we've had pretty good success in making arrests in the vast majority of those," said Laurel County Sheriff's Deputy Gilbert Acciardo.

He says when home invasions do happen, people have the right to defend themselves.

"If someone is coming into your residence on you, you have the right to protect yourself. So we tell citizens yes, you need to be armed and you need to know how to use your weapon," said Deputy Acciardo.

Burnette was at Saint Joseph's Hospital in London, but hospital officials tell us he has been transferred to UK Hospital.
