ELKHORN CITY, Ky. (WYMT) - Police in Pike County are searching for a man they say vandalized the grave marker of an unknown soldier.

They say it is a senseless act.

"It's an unknown soldier's grave that somebody who defended for our country and to demolish something like that and it being there that long for somebody to do that now is really sad," said Elkhorn City Mayor Mike Taylor.

The grave marker of an unknown confederate soldier buried just outside Elkhorn City in 1865 was repeatedly run over, and police say it was no accident.

They say tire marks show how the suspect circled around, hitting the marker over and over again.

That is not all. Police say whoever did it took the sign and dumped it over the hill. An anonymous call led them to it.

"I don't understand that. I don't understand what put something in somebody's mind to want to do that," said Taylor.

Now they think they know who is behind it all.

"We've spoke with several people. We know who did the actual damage to the sign," said Elkhorn City Police Chief Adam Swindall.

They are not releasing the suspect's name because they say they are still investigating.

"It's a suspect that I've dealt with several other times here in the city. I've got an officer that's supposed to send somebody up to do the fingerprints on the sign to see if we can match it up and make a stronger case on him," said Swindall.

But they all hope to get to the bottom of it soon so they can restore the grave and the unknown soldier can continue to rest in peace.

"We will put a new one up," said Taylor.

Anyone with information about this case should contact Elkhorn City Police or Kentucky State Police.
