LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Bullets were flying inside Laurel County’s Sublimity Elementary School but only of the artificial kind.

“They shoot pellets. They hurt when they hit you. It gives you that realistic atmosphere,” said. Lt. Rodney Van Zant of the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.

The scenario was an active shooter inside the school and police say they wanted to make the drill as realistic as possible.

Deputies were dressed up in full special response gear and were armed with automatic rifles and face masks.

“As an instructor I want to put our guys in a real mindset. That it is the real scenario. I want you to think as realistic as you can,” said Van Zant.

Police say they put in place a speed, surprise and violence of action plan, hoping to take away the advantage the intruder would have.

“If I put myself in the role of an active shooter and I am inside the area, I control that area, I own it, I have to take that from him,” said Van Zant.

Hoping their training trims seconds away from the threat and saves as many lives as possible.
