WOODBINE, Ky. (WYMT) -
Police say an argument led to a shooting in Knox County involving an 86-year-old man!
It happened on Prewitt Road in Woodbine on Wednesday night.
State police arrested 86-year-old Fred Meyer.
Police say he shot 50-year-old Chris Dinkins who was in a mini-van in his driveway. A teenager was also in the mini-van but was not hurt.
Freddie Gregory lives next door to his uncle Fred Meyer on Prewitt Road. He was surprised there was a shooting at his uncle's home.
"We didn't know what was going on really," said Gregory.
Police say Meyer shot Chris Dinkins. Detectives say Dinkins was in his mini-van in Meyer's driveway when police say Meyer fired one shot from his porch and it hit Dinkins in the face.
Police say a 16 year old boy in the mini-van was not hurt.
"I would say that something had to have built up. A man just doesn't pull into his driveway and a man shoot him. I'm sure of that. They had to have some kind of altercation or something or argument or something. Something had to have happened," said Gregory.
Police say there was an argument before the shooting.
Gregory says Dinkins and Meyer have known each other for years, but he believes the trouble stemmed from Dinkins' wife moving in with Meyer to take care of him.
Police charged Meyer with assault. He pleaded not guilty on Thursday.
Meyer turned down our request for a jailhouse interview.
Gregory says he is surprised his 86-year-old uncle is now in jail charged with a crime.
"That really surprised me on my uncle because he's very intelligent. I don't know how he got that far out of hand," said Gregory.
Knox County jail officials say bond for Meyer is $100,000 cash.
DInkins was flown to UK Hospital. Police say he is in serious condition.
