Police say man had meth lab in same home as his elderly aunt

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Thirty-five year old Robert Shockey faces Manufacturing Methamphetamine, Unlawful Possession of a Meth Precursor and Wanton Endangerment charges for allegedly having a meth lab in the same home as his elderly aunt, who is on oxygen.

On Monday, someone complained to police Shockey was making meth at his Big Creek home.

"That's what we want. We have several meth labs for the year and that's what we want. We want people to call in and let us know and if we can make contact with them and get them, then we will," said Chief Deputy with the Perry County Sheriff's Office, Tony Eversole.

Police say they have responded to calls at this house on Big Creek Road before, because of drugs and domestic violence.

Officials say when Shockey answered the door, he looked like somebody that they would suspect is making meth.

"They're going to have the burns especially if they're cooking. It pops on the skin and burns the skin and they have an obvious look about them and our officers are well trained in that...He had the obvious meth burns," said Chief Deputy Eversole.

Officials say they found a portable meth lab in Shockey's bedroom after he gave police consent to search his home. The same home where his elderly aunt, who is on oxygen, lives.

"There's fumes that can kill you and there's certain volatile stages in it that can actually cause a fire explosion and we want to protect everybody and save as many lives as we can," Chief Deputy Eversole said.

One person, Megan Holbrook, lives in Big Creek, and has a nine-month old daughter, and says the news is disturbing.

"I wouldn't want that to hurt her health in any way and it worries me because I can't trust my neighbors," Holbrook said.

Shockey is being held at Kentucky River Regional Jail in Hazard. Police say he has multiple felony convictions.
