WHITESBURG, Ky (WYMT) - Police in Letcher County are searching for a man after he escaped from work release Tuesday afternoon.

The jailer says John Paul Wells was working Tuesday afternoon, but the jailer says Wells ran away while the truck was parked at a local store.

"It's not common, but it's not rare. It happens occasionally," said Letcher County Jailer Don McCall.

McCall says a supervisor and three inmates were stopped at Fraiser's Farmer Supply to get a chainsaw sharpened when John Paul Wells took off.

"We have checked with all of his immediately family and friends that we knew of, and we searched the area thoroughly," said McCall.

But, so far Wells hasn't turned up.

The jailer says he was serving time on a parole violation for the original charge of receiving stolen property and was set to be released in two years.

If you know where wells is, you should call police.

The jailer says he will face escape charges when caught.
