HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Police in Hazard said they need your help finding a man who they said could be a serious threat to the public.
An officer and sergeant from the Hazard Police Department said James Barger is a convicted felon. They said they believe he has played a role in multiple burglaries and thefts in Perry County and witnesses told them he has a gun.
Police said he is armed and dangerous.
“He is a danger, you know, to everybody because he is carrying a firearm he could use it on anybody,” said Sgt. David Wiseman of the Hazard Police Department.
He said 25-year-old Barger is a persistent felony offender.
“He has been in trouble before,“ said Wiseman.
Wiseman said he had at least four warrants out for his arrest. Officer Steve Everidge said they believe he is tied to multiple burglaries with one common link.
“We believe that he steals the merchandise and then sells it for drugs,” said Everidge.
Everidge said he believed he was involved in purse snatchings in November at Food City.
“It is believed to be him based on the fact that he has been seen in a white Pontiac,” said Everidge.
Everidge said police thought there could be another person involved in the snatchings and they are telling everyone to be on alert.
“If somebody does try to stop him when he is trying to steal their stuff he could use the gun on them,” said Wiseman.
Wiseman said they hoped to catch him before that happens.
Police said one of the cars he has been seen in is a 2004 white four door Pontiac. They said witnesses have seen him in other alleged stolen vehicles. Wiseman said he was also believed to be linked to a recent theft from Tractor Supply Company in Hazard.
Anyone with information should call police.
