Police: Man admitted to killing grandmother

Updated: Tue 8:23 PM, Aug 02, 2011

During a hearing in Laurel County Tuesday, murder suspect Jeremy Owens put his face in his hands as police laid out their evidence against him.

Owens is accused of killing his grandmother last week.

“Preliminary evidence (of the autopsy) showed she died of a gunshot wound to the head, but she was also beaten and stabbed,” Laurel County Sheriff’s Det. Billy Madden testified in Laurel District Court Tuesday.

It was a violent end to 74-year-old Bernice Champlin’s life a murder police say her grandson admitted to several times over.

“He admitted to shooting his grandmother to Sheriff Root, Sgt. Poynter, me and Sgt. Brad Mitchell,” said Det. Madden.

Police say Jeremy Owens received Percocet pills from his grandmother daily, but something happened last Wednesday.

“There was a fight, a struggle, he woke up over top of her….with a gun in his hand,” said Det. Madden.

Police also testified of a possible premeditation based on evidence they found on Facebook.

That was found when detectives say they were looking at a post made on Owens brother’s page.

“It said 'Mamaw needs to die.' And that was Monday at 4:20 p.m.” said Det. Madden.

The judge found probable cause and sent the case on to the grand jury.

Owens is still in jail on a $250,000 cash only bond.
