A police officer is recovering after a violent crash in Rowan County.

The crash happened early Monday morning along KY 32 in Morehead.

Police say a deer suddenly walked out in front of Morehead Police Officer Brad Gillock's cruiser, while he was en route to a call.

Gillock's attempt to avoid hitting the deer sent him out of control, causing the cruiser to run off the side of the road, tear through signs, and eventually go airborne.

"It caused him to go off the roadway and strike another vehicle and building here," said Morehead Police Chief Mike Adams.

The building was a restaurant for more than forty years, and now is a vacuum shop. Jimmy Thacker has owned it since 1960.

"I woke up this morning and noticed my building about half torn down. The officer jumped the rock wall and hit my building here," Thacker said.

After seeing the damage to Officer Gillock's cruiser, and what was left in it's path, police say they're grateful he wasn't more seriously injured.

Police say Officer Gillock was responsive and alert after the accident. He was taken to the hospital, where he had surgery on his arm.

We're told Gillock is now recovering at home.
