Someone is writing hundreds of thousands of dollars in fake checks in Harlan County.
Kentucky State Police tell us so far there are two arrests in this case. Both are people from out of state who cashed the forged checks.
Police will not release the names of the victims in the scam. But they will tell us that one is a local business and the other is a state office.
Ten forged checks were held up by UPS before being mailed out. Those checks totaled almost $700,000.
"We've been getting information within the past day or two, new checks surfacing and things like that. One positive aspect is that the banks that are involved in it are aware of the situation. None of the checks are clearing," said Sergeant Jacqualine Pickrell with Kentucky State Police.
The returned checks have been sent to the crime lab in Frankfort to check for fingerprints.
State Police tell us the checks are showing up all across the nation, and businesses in Harlan County should watch their bank statements over the next few weeks.
We will continue to follow this investigation.
