Post Office might close

In an effort to save money ... the U.S. Postal Service plans to close or consolidate about two thousand rural post offices across the country.
One of the offices that's under review is in Harlan County.

It's a place on Highway 38 in Harlan County where the river runs through it ...and there's not much else.

For folks like Dovie Hamblin that call Holmes Mill home ...the thought of losing the post office...means losing everything.

"We need our post office...that's all we have around here," said Hamblin.

Hamblin's grandfather started the post office decades ago.
She started a petition to try to save the small building surrounded by houses.
If the doors close, Hamblin says it will be a struggle.

"It will be a long drive and a lot of people can't drive and don't have anything to drive," said Hamblin.

"To me, the postal service needs to look at more effective operations and still serve rural areas," said Harlan County Judge Executive Joe Grieshop.

County leaders just hope the petition will help save the business.

There is a post office at Closplint which is in between Evarts and Holmes Mill.
Local leaders fear that small facility will not be able to handle everyone from Holmes Mill if the post office closes.
