Pregnant woman arrested on drug charges

She is eight months pregnant, and police say they caught her doing drugs.
Pikeville Police arrested 22 year old Erica Coleman of Elkhorn City on Friday.
She is facing several drug-related charges. Officers say they caught her and her boyfriend shooting up drugs behind a fast food restaurant. The eight month pregnant woman then went to jail.

Coleman appeared in Pike County District Court on Monday morning and entered a not guilty plea to four charges.

Police say they are concerned for the unborn baby's health.

Pikeville Police officer Tony Conn said it started when he found a suspicious car behind Hardee's on Friday. He says Coleman and Kyle Thacker were inside.

"Both appeared to be under the influence of narcotics, upon further investigation, my suspicions were confirmed," said Conn.

He says there was a large amount of drugs in the car and says Coleman told him she was injecting suboxone.
"She had shot the suboxone into her thumb. She had track marks here on her thumb, also on the bends of her arms, and in the other hand on her thumb," said Conn.

Conn says EMS took the eight month pregnant Coleman to Pikeville Medical Center. She was released the same night and went straight to jail.
"She was a habitual user. You could tell by her demeanor and the marks on her arms and hands," said Conn.

Monday morning, Coleman pleaded not guilty to public intoxication, drug possession, drug paraphernalia, failure to appear in court, and contempt of court charges.
Her attorney asked for her release from jail saying, "Right now this is only an allegation, and if she is pregnant and is on some type of medication, then it's probably dangerous to keep her in jail."

Judge Darrel Mullins agreed to put her on home incarceration and ordered frequent drug tests for the health of the unborn child.
"She needs to be tested more than anybody normally. First time she fails, she goes back to jail," Judge Mullins said during court.

Coleman is due back in court in February.

Kyle Thacker was also arrested on several drug charges and is out on bond.

Pikeville Police are still investigating where the couple got the drugs.
