Prestonsburg Fire Chief Bobby Carpenter is back on the job, less than one week after his own home caught fire.
"It's been a gut check experience," Carpenter says. "It took a while, even fighting the fire, for the reality to set in."
Carpenter's home looks to be a total loss, but his son and wife made it out OK.
"I'm grateful, relieved and angry if that's possible," Carpenter says, "but, my family's all OK, and that's what's important."
Carpenter's house fire started in the attic. He says if it could happen to him, it could happen to anyone.
"I can't stress, enough, the importance of smoke detectors," Carpenter says. "And families need a working safety plan in their home, and they need to practice it often."
