Professor teaches leadership through basketball

Grace Gorrell says her approach to the NCAA tournament is different from other professors.

"I am a true believer that you can mix fun and learning," she says.

Using a book called The 21 Laws of Leadership, Gorrell's been using the Wildcat basketball team's on-court success to teach leadership concepts to her students.

"There's just so many great examples so instead of not paying attention to it, I want the students to embrace what they've been through," says Gorrell.

She says excusing her students to go to the tournament contributes to their college experience and creates teachable moments. Her students agree.

"Grace does an amazing job of relating the leadership practices that we learn in class to real-life situations. You can see them in action. You can see Anthony Davis and the law of sacrifice that he shows in order to bring everybody involved," says UK junior Michael Gasser.

Today, the students are working in teams to show examples of how Coach Cal and the Wildcats embodied the leadership principles they've been learning about in class. Gorrell says teaching this way also makes it easier to relate to her students.

"I want to try to connect with them and this is what they've been in to, so by golly we're going to to connect and learn from that too," she says.

The students also took a "thank you" banner to the team at Wildcat Lodge.
