Construction is well underway at the new liquid nitrogen plant site in Letcher County.

Officials told WYMT the company actually just hired their first employees today, and the new workers will start in less than two weeks.

In June, Ferus officials were joined by Governor Steve Beshear and people across Letcher County to break ground for the new plant. Now six months later, construction at the plant site is well underway.

"We're trying to beat the weather, but we're right on schedule," said Fred Adams, the site manager.

Inside the front facility, crews are installing new plumbing where the bathrooms will go. There will also be offices for staff and a large floor for storage.

Behind the building, there is a muddy mess of gravel, trucks, and concrete. But back there is actually where the plant operations will take place.

Letcher County Judge Executive Jim Ward says the impact of the plant will reach beyond the Industrial Park. He says it will pump money into the area and recruiting even more businesses.

"We have been contacted by a couple more prospects that are maybe looking to come in to the industrial park," said Ward.

Adams says construction on the nitrogen plant itself should start in April.

He says Ferus has hired six drivers, three dispatchers, and three plant operators. They will start January 3.
