Family credits dog in saving their lives in house fire

Krista Kent knew something was wrong in the middle of the night.

“My dog jumped off my bed, she did it differently than she does any other time,” said Kent Wednesday morning.

She followed her black lab into the living room.

“I started screaming, it was on fire,” she said.

She got her husband Jeffrey and roommate Kayley up. And she believes a premonition Tuesday night ensured Kayley was downstairs instead of in her usual upstairs room.

“She was going to wait another day to move downstairs. And when I got home from work last night, I said, no, you’re not,” Kent said.

All three got out, but their 3 of their 6 dogs did not.

“We had two black and tan full blooded “wiener” dogs, CKC registered. And one of her babies,” Kent said.

Investigators from both Somerset fire and police departments were working the scene earlier and said the cause was “under investigation.” But the home’s occupants say they have their suspicions.

“The fire started from the outside, there was nothing inside that could have caused it to go that way,” said resident Kayley Saphner.

The three have a place to stay, as their landlord has given them another home to rent for the Holiday. And they’re thankful their dog was alert in the wee hours of the morning.

“If our dog hadn’t woke me up, we’d be dead,” Kent said.
