Push for "sales tax holiday" in Kentucky continues

For years, people have crossed the border into Tennessee for a "sales tax holiday" that happens three days each year...and if a Hazard lawmaker gets his wish, people will soon be coming to Kentucky to find bargains.

People shop in Middlesboro everyday, but when the first weekend of August comes around, some head elsewhere to save some money.

"Living on the border, I think most people go to Tennessee anyway when they provide that tax free time in Tennessee," said Christy Bean, a Middlesboro Mall shopper.

Shoppers like Christy say they would rather spend their money here, at home.

"Being able to do it here locally, to shop locally would benefit the economy as well to be able to stay here for a tax free weekend," she said.

"We always talk about keeping our money at home; spend it at home. That's what we're trying to do and also to save our families the money," said Representative Fitz Steele.

Which is important during tough times.

"We're in a hard time. People say we're pulling out of it but I don't see it. I don't even see any light at the end of the tunnel right now and with children, it's very expensive," Steele explained.

Even students realize that shopping for school supplies is not cheap.

"When you have to have your binders and your papers and your pens it all really adds up and every penny counts especially now when nobody's hiring," said Tessa Gibson, a college student.

Right now, every little bit counts and many are hoping the bill passes. Representative Steele says the bill has been filed but has not been heard in committee yet.
