R.W. Combs Elementary remembers student killed in shooting

Updated: Tue 8:17 PM, Jan 22, 2013

Tuesday was the first day back to school for students at R.W. Combs Elementary School since the deadly shooting at Hazard Community and Technical College.

Taylor Cornett, the youngest victim, was a 6th grader there.

The principal says they spent the day writing letters and notes to Taylor.

The lobby was turned into a memorial honoring Taylor.

"Her positive attitude will be influential to anyone that met her," said Principal Josh Baker.

He says many students are struggling to deal with what happened last week, and several counselors were on hand to help kids cope.

"As we talk to the kids, a lot of the kids just don't understand how this can happen to a 12-year-old," said Tara Calhoun, a counselor with Kentucky River Community Care.

She says many of the students just need someone to talk to.

Tuesday afternoon, students at the school released balloons in Taylor's honor.

The administrators say a void will be left in the school without Taylor.

The principal plans to have counselors at the school the rest of this week and throughout the school year as students continue to grieve.

He also says they are retiring Taylor's basketball jersey, number four.
