SITKA, Ky. (WYMT)- Race car driver, Josh McGuire, is recovering after a violent crash at the 201 Speedway in Johnson County. Hundreds watched the crash happen at the track and thousands have seen it online.
A video from the 'Halloween 50' at the 201 Speedway in Johnson County has more than 23,000 views on YouTube because of this violent crash involving track regular, Josh McGuire, who broke his own track record earlier that night.
Track officials say McGuire was going somewhere around 100 MPH as he entered the first turn on his fourth lap...when his car began to flip.
Tony Sturgill says,"The car seemed to veer over on its side and began flipping, a vicious flip and it rolled and rolled."
The violent crash left the number 41 car mangled, and the stands of more than 1,500 spectators silent.
McGuire's wife, Tracy says, "When I got to him on the track he was very alert and very awake, he was complaining of a little neck pain, maybe thought he had just pulled a muscle."
"At first we thought everything was alright because he was only complaining of minor neck pain but we transported him to the hospital for precautionary reasons," says Sturgill.
Doctors found that McGuire had a fracture in his C1 vertebrae and he was flown to St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia, where he is now recovering but his family says he will be okay and is very lucky.
"God definitely had his hands on him in that car that is for sure, because when you look at the statistics of these injuries and even when you Google C1 vertebra fractures...not very many good things show up," says Tracy McGuire.
News that his racing family is happy to hear as they wish number 41 a speedy recovery.
Doctors do not think McGuire will need surgery, but will spend the next three months in a neck brace 24/7.
