Rain doesn’t keep people away from Hillbilly Days

PIKEVILLE, Ky.(WYMT)- Thousands came out for Hillbilly Days in Pikeville this weekend.

It was a rainy start on Friday. Many people found themselves in the parking garage looking at the crafts and other vendors, and staying out of the rain.

“I came on the rainy day this year, but as long as you got happiness in your heart, you’re alright everywhere you go,” said John David Hunt.

Despite the rain, many never lost focus of the reason for this festival.

“The point is to raise money for a children’s hospital, for Shriner’s for crippled children. And that’s what we want you to do it go out and spend your money, so that money will go to a children’s hospital somewhere,” said Tennis B aisden.

And as the weather cleared up, that’s what people did.

Many say they come for the food, the rides and the people.

The festival will continue Friday night and Saturday with a parade.

There will also be the annual Hillbilly Run for the Kids on Saturday, but this year it will be a little different.

It starts at 8:00 a.m. at Big Sandy Community and Technical College in Pikeville.

You can either register in the morning from 6:30-7:30 or online at www.mingodiabetes.com.

Since the race began in 2005, traditionally the proceeds have gone to support the Shriner’s Hospital, but in light of this week’s events, half of the money will be going to the Boston Fund.

“Our running community is a really tight close nit family, and so when this happened it really effected all of us so we wanted in some way, really anyway we could give back to the community. And so that’s what we decided to do with this race,” said Allison Noud with the Tug Valley Road Runners.

There will be a 10-k run, a two mile walk, and a kid’s fun run.
