CLAY COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT)- For the first time in nearly four years, Red Bird Mission is getting ready to re-open their dorms to students in the fall.

“We’re in the process of renovating the dormitories right now. The boys’ dormitory is complete and ready for the fall, we are currently working on the girls’ dormitory,” Executive Director Dr. Taylor Collins said.

Students from all over the United States, like Elisha Texeria, 14, are spending their Spring Break in the mountains to help with renovations.

“It’s a good feeling to know that you’ve helped out and made people’s lives better because I know if I was in this situation, I’d want to feel good,” Texeria said.

The Red Bird Mission Board voted to close Red Bird Christian School and its dormitories in 2010 because of lack of funding. The school was able to re-open later that year.

The move is part of a bigger picture that Collins says will help promote more leaders not just in the church, but also in the Appalachian region.

“We’ve been very short of prominent leaders who can lead our people, who can lead to help people in the mountains to grow and to live good lives,” Collins added.

“It really helps people here and in this community,” Texeria said.

And allow students like Texeria to learn how to serve.

The dormitory program is open to students of any denomination who will attend Red Bird Christian School starting in the fall.
