WASHINGTON, D.C. (WYMT) - Representative Hal Rogers heard from officials with the Food and Drug Administration Thursday about the controversial new drug Zohydro.
The House Appropriations Committee hearing focused on the hydrocodone-based painkiller, which the FDA approved last year and became available this month.
Rogers says the drug lacks any safeguards to prevent its abuse.
"I'm worried to death. I've been to too many emergency rooms with distraught parents watching their son or daughter die of an overdose, and I'm afraid this Zohydro could be abused unlike anything we've seen yet," he said.
Rogers says he hopes the FDA will reconsider its decision and delay approval until a tamper-resistant formulation of the drug is available.
