Report: Ky, W.Va. schools ready for disasters

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WYMT/AP) - A recent report shows schools in Kentucky and West Virginia are ready to deal with disasters.

Save the Children's annual National Report Card says both states meet all of the organization's standards for protecting students and children in child-care services.

The states are two of the 17 that meet all of the standards.

The report commends West Virginia for ensuring school disaster plans include measures to accommodate children with special needs.

According to the report, 27 states don't require all child-care facilities to have a plan that accounts for children with disabilities.

Mike Pickens with the West Virginia Department of Education tells the Charleston Gazette (http://bit.ly/RQQ2w8 ) that his agency works closely with the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
