Freezing temperatures cause problems for road crews in Big Sandy Region

Updated: Fri 6:02 PM, Feb 01, 2013

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Road crews in the Big Sandy Region continue to battle the elements to make sure the roads stay safe. Officials say they have been out since Thursday night salting and scraping the roads.

Road crews say they knew from the start of those shifts on Thursday night, they had their work cut out. Salt truck driver Justin Mayhorn says, "I don't know if it is a real word but I felt like I was in a 'snow-nado'. It was coming from all different angles, the roads were horrible, at one time they were in pretty good shape but then it all froze back."

As those roads froze over Friday morning, it caused a mess with drivers slipping off roadways and even causing some trouble for salt truck drivers.

Mayhorn explains, "When we got down there, he was up on his side, he plunged right over the edge. We are thankful he is alright because it was a pretty bad wreck."

Road crews hoped that the sun would help clear things up but salt truck driver Shawn Mullins notes while driving his route Friday afternoon, "As you can see it is still pretty ice even this late in the daytime."

Even with the sun out, freezing temperatures caused major headaches for road crews. Mullins says, "When the temperature starts falling, it doesn't matter how much salt you use you can't get the roads to break up with all the ice."

Road crews say with the continually dropping temperatures and more snow on its way, they expect to stay busy through the weekend. Mullins explains, "It is going to be pretty exciting, the rest of the weekend. A lot of this won't melt and then we get another couple inches...it is going to be another slick time."

Officials say if possible avoid being on the roads until this has time to melt. Road crews say they will still be out treating and clearing the roads tonight so make sure you use caution when driving around salt trucks.
