Road repairs will cause long delays

PIKE COUNTY – January 28, 2013 – Embankment repairs on KY 881, Brushy Road, started this morning and could take several weeks, causing long delays for motorists.

Crowd Transporters, a contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, is drilling railroad steel to repair several breaks between mile point 3 and the end of the road, which is mile point 10.780. This is not the area where KY 881 collapsed last year and was rebuilt. The work under now involves a series of smaller breaks that have accumulated over time.

Shane Hatfield, Superintendent at Highway District 12’s Canada Maintenance facility, said that work will start between 8:30 and 9 each morning and stop each afternoon around 3:30. The work schedule is set to accommodate school bus traffic.

Regarding long delays, Hatfield said, “There are some places where the drilling rig can be moved aside to let traffic through, but there are other spots where the road isn’t wide enough to move the rig and have enough room for a car to pass. In those instances, people would be much better off to take another route.”

Hatfield said that flaggers at each end of the work zone should be able to tell motorists how long a delay they can expect, depending on the width of the road for the break being worked on at the time.

“We know this is a real inconvenience,” Hatfield said. “But we ask people to remember that it’s a temporary thing and that their road will be much, much more stable and safe once this work is finished.”
