Road and power crews gear up for winter storm

The wet snow is the kind that has caused problems in the past, especially on power lines.

Road crews spent the day getting their equipment cleaned and ready to go, but that is half the battle. This storm could put power crews to work, too.

At the State Highway Garage in Minnie, it's out with the old and in with the new.

"We've been in there changing snow plow blades and checking our fluid and engine levels," said Brady Conn, with the Department of Highways, "Seems like you get one storm and then two days later another one comes."

This wet snow we are expecting is hard on the equipment.

"It's tough to push," said Conn, "You'll mess some jacks up; you'll mess some plows up."

It's also hard on power lines.

"A wet snow does cause us concern. We are watching the weather right now," said Mike Lasslo, with American Electric Power.

Power officials spent all afternoon in a conference call, where they will decide who to send where - if the lights go out.

"Depending on what we expect, we will make a call on how many crews we can bring in," said Lasslo.

This as road crews get ready to trim trees if need be.

"If a tree falls in the road, we've got to remove it," said Conn.

Yet another duty they are charged with, for another winter storm.

There is one bright side. Road crews say a wet snow does not require as much salt to keep the roads clean. That's good news because they have already used a lot of salt this winter.
