WYMT Severe Weather Alert

Rowan County Deals with Early Winter Storm

Posted: Thu 10:44 PM, Dec 16, 2010

Here in Rowan County, the problems were caused by snow rather than ice. This morning, the area was covered in four to five inches of snow. Morehead State University was forced to close for the day, causing disruptions for some students.

"It's crazy, messing with exam schedules and trying to get home as well. I don't want to drive on the interstate while it's like this,"says Brad Schneider.

"Actually one of my finals was rescheduled for Saturday from one to three and I need to go home. I have five hours to drive and I don't want to be on the road at night when it's getting even worse, so it really concerns me," says Stephanie Thorpe.

In rural Rowan County, David Daniels worked to clear his driveway.

"I'm out playing in the snow. It's good exercise and the doctor says I shouldn't be out in this weather, but what do doctors know?" he says.

Even though he's had to work hard to clear a path, he has a positive outlook.

"I think you learn to deal with it. You take it day by day and whatever comes along, we're content with."

As some people were trying to dig their way out of their driveways, others were trying to bring customers in the door.

JP Tranbarger, who runs a Morehead barber shop, says this winter weather is hurting his bottom line.
"I've never seen it this bad this quick. It hurts business definitely. People can't get out and maneuver around. This close to Christmas is usually a pretty good week with people getting trimmed up for the season. It definitely makes an impact," he says.
